Digital skills are becoming more and more important in todays’ society. In order to prepare youngsters for their future, schools should pay more attention to being able to write a scripting language for, for example, a website or a program, the so-called coding lessons.
At school, children are offered lots of nice things, but learning how to program (coding) is not (yet) one of them. Programming is the skill of the future: it promotes creativity, it enables you to learn how to collaborate with people all over Europe and even all around the world. It enables you to communicate in a universal lan-guage! In a society focused on computers, pupils of primary school should – in addition to math, language and geography – also learn computer programming language. In the future it will probably be just as important to be able to program as to speak English in a correct way. The skills needed to do this will help to under- stand the ‘background’ of the devices that we use every day. Programming teaches children to create instead of to consume. When programming, children learn these skills: Creative and logical thinking – Spatial insight – Problem solving ability – To structure things/situations -To collaborate, …. Learning how to program is not necessarily intended to train children to become a computer programmer, but to teach them skills that will be very useful for every choice of studies or job in the future.
Coding4Kids aims to offer added value across Europe by teaching the basics of this programming language to bring countries closer together and work cooper-atively with each other, not only within the consortium, but also between the dif- ferent target groups.
